PTA cladding
PTA cladding is a coating method to apply a wear-resistant and/or corrosion-resistant material to a part. PTA is an abbreviation for Plasma Transferred Arc. This name is derived from how the material is transported by plasma. The powdered material is added to the welding arc, allowing it to melt. The compound created by PTA cladding is metallurgical. With a PTA source, the surface of the cladded part is melted. At the same time, a metal powder is applied to the molten workpiece surface. This powder melts and bonds with the base material.
Advantages of PTA cladding
Significant advantages of PTA Cladding compared to conventional welding processes such as TIG and MIG welding is the minimal heat input and, therefore, low mixing with the base material. An additional advantage of this technique is the limited deformation of the base material. An alternative to PTA cladding with an even lower heat input is laser cladding.
